A healthy Metroid series and an inspired Retro Studios are both key ingredients to Nintendo putting their best foot forward, so while I hope to learn a bit more about the game in 2020, I’ll gladly sit through however long of a delay it takes to get us a title worthy of the Metroid Prime series and of Retro Studios. The studio seems like it was suffering from tough times for one reason or another, but revisiting the Metroid Prime series may get them back int heir groove. Metroid Prime 4‘s delay will hopefully produce an incredible game, but beyond that, the return to familiar territory may even help reorient the apparently wayward Retro Studios, who, despite tons of rumors, has not released a game since Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in 2014. Shigeru Miyamoto’s famous quote has been repeated millions of times, but it is worth reiterating here: “a delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.” I think everyone can agree that in the grand scheme of things, it’s best for Nintendo to take the time to ensure that their game lives up to the hype. Waiting is not fun, but we’ve had plenty of other great games in the meantime, and when we finally can join Samus in her next quest, there is a significantly better chance that it lives up to the incredibly high bar set by its predecessors.

METROID PRIME 4 DELAY UPDATE

Nowadays, one year is a drop of time in the world of game development, so it is understandable that we are still in the dark as to when Metroid Prime 4 will come out, or even when we will even receive a more positive update with details such as a premise or gameplay. Bringing the masterminds behind the acclaimed original Metroid Prime Trilogy back into the mix was an exciting move, but it also delayed the title indefinitely.

Nintendo decided that the change was necessary because the game was struggling to meet their quality standards, suffering from a lumbering, troubled development cycle. One year ago today, Nintendo announced that the perpetually mysterious hype machine Metroid Prime 4 would begin development anew at the hands of Retro Studios. Metroid is in the next tier of franchises, and a delay, especially with the other games they also have lined up, isnt by itself troubling.
